Historia:
I called Hurc Saturday for a Sunday ride. He helped me with my bike as I had just changed out my rims for the new set we had polished and painted. It really dressed the bike up nice and I was grateful for his help. Hurc was busy Sunday morning so we decided for a lunch / afternoon ride.
Sunday: Game on, I was in the right frame of mind to top the bike out so I had mentioned that we go to “our” spot for such foolishness. We had lunch and met some cool fellow bikers and had some chit chat at a weekend biker hangout. After we left we had a nice cruise and I topped off with some fuel as we went out to the long straights of the highway in the glades. I was really excited for some serious top speed action. With no traffic and all clear in both our lanes as far as the eyes can see …….Hurc started to accelerate up to about 160 and climbing, I held back behind him about ¼ mile holding pace. I was in 6th gear and then opened it open and started pushing 15 pounds boost and passed by in my lane at 11,000 +rpm’s in full tuck. I stayed in it for a while and the moment I let off I heard a Kbooooom! I glanced in the mirrors but couldn’t see the road momentarily (white cloud) then felt super hot burning on my legs. I thaught I may be on fire from the knees down but couldn’t look down because of the speed and remained calm and in tuck without trying to overreact or overcorrect. I remember pulling the clutch in for fear of the motor locking up and the needle was showing about 180. At the moment, time had stopped and everything was in slow motion. I also remembered to stay off the brakes and let the bike slow down on it’s own until I can figure out what’s going on. Everything is happening so fast yet time is soooo slow. My legs still felt like they were on fire but began to cool. I got down to about 120mph which felt slow enough for me to sit upright and look down. I started to analyze me and the bike and everything was soaked in hot oil. I continued to stay off the brakes and kept thinking, “if that oil hits the turbo me and the bike are going to be in flames and I am soaked in oil from the knees down.” So I aligned along the shoulder and looked at the grass and looked at where to eject if that should be the case. Trying to remain clam….I rolled to a stop. Got off the bike and just listen to the thing sizzle like eggs frying. I was waiting for flames but got lucky. Hurc went and got the trailer and we loaded the bike. I made the joke that the bike sure was pretty soaked in oil because the mid day sun made it shine like it was new and wet. I got it home and pulled the motor.
What happen? Obviously I pushed it under not the best circumstances. Boost level, super hot day with very warm intake air, engine Rpm, and not optimum race fuel, Funny, I just told Hurc I need to turn the boost down. Once the pistons burnt the hole, the crank case pressure jumped up from 15pounds boost and blew out the head cover gasket which tossed oil out the top end. The crankcase pressure relief system could not cope with that much pressure instantaneously. As you can see from the pics the piston are junk, bottom of the head is a mess and I have some work to do. The Corillo rods and crank survived. The bottom end will get checked out with new bearings and oil pump etc... Meanwhile, my spare motor goes in. Thank God I didn’t wreck. I can honestly say that that was a serious unwanted adrenaline rush. And yes Bobsha….intercooling system upgrade. lol
